The Centre of interpretation of the Punic Wall supposes the recovery of the remains of the ancient Carthaginian wall (III century B.C.) situated at the entrance of the city, and is one of the scarce punic findings located in the Iberian peninsula. The remains discovered are 30 metres long and some parts are conserved courses of blocks about 3 metres high. Together with the wall one can visit the remains of a funeral crypt belonging to the hermitage of Saint Joseph, built during the XVI and XVII centuries. In its plastered walls there can still be seen the paintings of the death dance which formed the pictorial programme of the crypt, paintings with a moral and educational function. Both remains are found interlocked in one of the five hills which surround Cartagena, on the side of Mount Aletes, the actual hill of Saint Joseph, exactly where the isthmus of the ancient peninsula of the city was located.
Conception Castle, Centre for the interpretation of the History of Cartagena is the best setting off point to know the city and get a general vision of it´s 3,000 year history: the Punic Cartagena founded around the year 229 B.C. by General Asdrúbal; the mining riches that came years later to the Romans converting it into one of the most important colonies of the Roman Hispanic; the taking by the Arabs and the conquest for the "Castilla" by Alfonso X in 1245; the military splendour of the XVIII century to it´s conversion into the Marine Department of the Mediterranean; and the XIX century, when Cartagena lived one of it´s most splendid epochs thanks to it´s industrialization and the important traffic to it´s port. The setting chosen to carry out this journey through history is the Hispanic- Muslim fortress situated in the Hill of the Conception, the highest mountain of the five which protect the city, and which has served as an enclave for the Roman temple dedicated to Asklepio ( The god of health), a Muslim citadel, a medieval castle and the place to hang the siren which advised the population of the bombings during the Civil War. In the same way it offers the best panoramic view of the city and it´s natural port. All within reach thanks to the panoramic lift that saves the height of the mount.

The House of Fortune contains the remains of a Roman dwelling brought to light in 2000. Its construction is dated from the end of the 1st century B.C. coinciding with an important urbanization process. The house occupied an area of 204 m2 and belonged to a wealthy family, since this kind of domus, one-family house, usually was the residence of the wealthy classes. It offers a panoramic view of the domestic life of the Roman period through the different rooms that it is comprised of, such as the tablinum or the representation room, the cubicula or bedrooms, the triclinium where they celebrated the banquets and the atrium. To help create an idea of the customs and culture of the era, some of the pieces found in the excavations are displayed, such as the herma, the china, money, objects for personal adornment, lamps and weights. Outstanding among all the admirable findings of the House of Fortune are the wall paintings and mosaics. The Latin inscription "Fortuna propita" whose translation could be "Good luck," has served to give the house the name Domus of fortune. This welcoming greeting was displayed to be read by the people who came to the Domus by way of the back door.

The discovery and excavation of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena is one of the most surprising archaeological discoveries of the city. This site has remained hidden for centuries because of it's location in an area of the city uninterruptedly inhabited. For this reason its original features remained hidden with the passage of time. An example of this inhabitation was the partial superimposition of the Old Cathedral on the top part of the Roman Theatre, one of the major singularities of this archaeological collection. An imposing building with a capacity for 6000 people whose particular characteristics certify the important role played by Cartagena in the history of the Ancient Hispania. Moreover, its proximity to some of the more emblematic buildings such as the Cathedral, the City Council Palace, the medieval Castle and the port facilities, makes it one of the most attractive places and monuments of Cartagena. The Museum, projected by the architect Rafael Moneo, has come to answer the need for museum space to bring together all the various pieces found during the successive excavations. The Museum sets about to incorporate the Riquelme Palace and include the Old Saint Mary's Church in the collection, making the Theatre the final and most notable piece presented in the Museum.
