Sunset on Sancti Petri
Watch the sun go down behind the site of the Temple of Hercules as you watch the flamingoes take flight in this sunset cruise around the Bay of Cadiz.
We´ll leave the port of Chiclana de la Frontera in the early evening and sail into the Bay of Cadiz Nature Reserve. Flamingoes and spoonbills are just some of the species of bird that use the Bay of Cadiz as a breeding ground or resting place on their migrations so you should not forget your binoculars. The Bay of Cadiz is a maze of salt marshes and creeks located between the towns of Cadiz, San Fernando, Chiclana and Puerto Real.
We´ll pass the abandoned site of an almadraba (a maze of nets used for fishing tuna) continuously used from Phoenecian times until it was abandoned in 1973 as we head for the island of Sancti Petri.
This small barren island was in ancient times the site of the famous Temple of Hercules, one of the most important sanctuaries in the ancient world. The temple began its decline in the 4th Century and was abandoned during the attacks of the Visigoths. Centuries of war and destruction, of high tides, fierce storms and stone quarrying mean that there´s not much left of the temple today. Now the only buildings on the island are a castle dating from the 17th Century and a lighthouse.
Then in this evening boat ride you can admire the incomparable spectacle of the sun sinking into the Atlantic against the stark backdrop of the ruins of Sancti Petri Castle before returning to Chiclana between 20:00 and 21:00.
