With the incredible landscape of lush valleys and high mountains, it's not difficult to see why walking is the most traditional outdoor activity on the island. The levadas are thin channels cut into the rock and over precipices, developed to transport water around the island. They act as important arteries, redirecting water to the drier areas of the island and feeding the fruit orchards, vineyards and gardens.
