Excursions in Colombo and South West Coast
Take a break in Colombo. Like many capital cities in developing countries, Colombo is fast changing its face. Almost overnight, skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood. Yet in some parts, the old world charm is retained. For example, there is a 100-year-old clock tower and several British-built colonial era buildings.
Absorb the salubrious cooler climes of the verdant hills of Sri Lankan hill country on this half a day adventure to Kandy proceeding from a spice garden to a tea estate and also enjoying the elephants frolicking in water and finally summing up for the day with a city tour unravelling the majesty of the last ancient citadel of Sri Lanka.
Visit the famous Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which provides visitors with the best chance of seeing a large number of elephants at close quarters. The orphanage was established in 1975 and commenced with seven orphaned elephants. Today some of these orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their calves born in the same location.
Get to know the real Colombo, from its iconic sights and must-see locales to its off-the-beaten-path secrets and local favourites. Our Colombo city discovery starts with a visit to the lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, and is a city landmark. A short drive brings us to the Oriental Hotel, the oldest hotel in Colombo, from where well hop in a tuk-tuk for a fun ride to the fruit and vegetable market. Well experience the vibrant activities of street life in Pettah, and then head to the Hindu Temple at Slave Island, named during British Colonial times. At the center of Slave Island is the Baira Lake, a large lake and recreational area where well stop for a visit to the Gangarama Temple, accessible by wooden platform.
This Colombo tour will show you everything you need to see, from a different perspective. We visit the Fort, where the architecture is reminiscent of the Dutch and British rule, enjoy the hustle and bustle of the street life in the Pettah and its markets, and make a stop at the Galle Face Green, the lively center of relaxation of the local population.
