Excursions in Buenos Aires

Navigating to Tigre

Navigating to Tigre

This tour was designed for people who want to get away from the masses, and are interested in other aspects of culture and nature. You will join a small group for a relaxed walking tour. The tour begins at the Plaza San Martín, where we will learn some important facts related to the foundation, development and subsequent expansion of the city and the province of Buenos Aires. Then we take the Mitre train, which leads us to the town of San Isidro, icon of the Argentinean aristocracy. Here the eponymous chapel by the Spanish explorer Domingo de Acassusso was founded in 1706. The temple is now one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country, and is part of the old quarter, which includes the pictographic "Paseo de los Ombúes” an interesting vantage point. Then take another train, the "Tren de la Costa", up to the delta station in the district of Tigre. A few blocks away is the Puerto de Frutos, link between life on the islands and the mainland, which formerly supplied the islands and sold what was produced there. It is now a local tourist spot, visited every weekend by the people of Buenos Aires, as a place of leisure along the river. In the port we will have free time to view the fair and take pictures. Later, we will walk to the river port of Tigre where we will see the monumental rowing clubs that make Tigre the national capital district of this activity. Next, we will take a boat and cruise through the canals of one of the largest deltas in the world, where we see how the inhabitants turned this swampy area into a developed one with grass paths and canals of fresh water. On the way we will see the yacht clubs, the house and museum of former President Sarmiento (who encouraged the first inhabitants of the area to live there), and the market, taxi and ambulance boats. After leaving the delta we cruise down the De la Plata River, the widest in the world, along the Costanera Navigation Canal, parallel to the coast of the city. We will arrive in Buenos Aires, seeing the skyline of the city, along with the River Plate Stadium, the University of Buenos Aires Campus and the city´s port and cruise terminal. Our boat trip and our tour end in Puerto Madero. *The tour includes guide and train and boat tickets*Ask for special dates and prices for groups and private tours

San Telmo & Mataderos Fair Tour

San Telmo & Mataderos Fair Tour

This tour, apart from being the symbol of rural tradition in Buenos Aires, transports us to the gaucho culture, the emblematic character of Argentinean history. We start by visiting the San Telmo Fair in the morning; an antique fair that takes place every Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. It was created in 1970 by architect José María Peña. The fair is composed of 270 stands and is located in Plaza Dorrego. It is visited by 10,000 people every week; tourists and locals. On the streets, you can see Tango Shows and orchestras playing for all the visitors. Here you can buy typical Argentine food from the restaurants or street venders. The main attraction in this ‘feria’ are the antiques and culture offered. By midday we travel to the Mataderos Fair, which began 20 years ago in the area where the old slaughterhouses of the city were located. Today it is the meeting point for people from the interior of the country who are deeply rooted to the customs of their provinces and for those living in this city that like to be surrounded by handcrafts, typical foods and folkloric music and dance. In 1991 the neighborhood was declared as “Neighborhood of the Argentinean Gaucho”. We will have some free time to visit the old archway of the market and then the “Museo Criollo de los Corrales”. This museum has many rural objects and will give us an idea of how gauchos lived in the pampas through clothing, tools and everyday objects. It will also show us how in Argentina the stockbreeding industry started to develop, from the period when Indians ruled the pampas until Argentina became one of the main exporters and a world leader in meats. We’ll see weapons, knives, carriages, animals, paintings and even the famous “quincho” or “ranch”, the meeting point for the countryside meals. Later we’ll go to lunch at the fair stalls. We’ll taste some typical foods such as tamales (ground meat with spices boiled into a corn leaf), humita en chala (similar to the tamales but instead of meat, ground corn with cheese), locro (a typical Argentinean stew) and some world-famous empanadas. Everything served with a delicious wine, obviously. After lunch we will have more free time to visit the stalls where we will find, apart from the handcrafts mentioned above, sweets, musical instruments, albums, clothes, accessories and objects for everyday use. Another place to visit is the historical Oviedo Bar, a place that used to be an old grocery store that supplied the slaughterhouse workers.

San Antonio de Areco with Ranch

San Antonio de Areco with Ranch

Located 113 km from Buenos Aires, this picturesque town conveys all the essence of gaucho life and customs. Founded under the protection of a chapel inaugurated by Don José Ruiz de Arellano in 1730, it retains the architectural lines of the Colonial and Renaissance buildings of the XIX century, in spite of the passing of time. El Ombú de Areco Ranch This historical estancia (ranch) is located in San Antonio de Areco, just over an hour´s drive from downtown Buenos Aires and the birthplace of the gaucho tradition. The Late-Colonial style mansion, built in 1880 by Lieutenant-General Pablo Riccheri, offers visitors a magnificent setting for an unforgettable stay. Enrique Boelcke, grandfather of the present owner Eva Boelcke, purchased El Ombú in 1934. Eva´s father, Osvaldo, a renowned botanist, ran the estancia as a working ranch until his death in 1990. Eva was trained as an agronomist, but since 1993 has expanded her role as farm manager to include local and international estancia tourism. El Ombú offers nine spacious, modernized bedrooms (6 doubles and 3 triples), with en suite bathrooms, large windows and an interesting array of period furniture. In winter, guests enjoy the warmth of central heating in every bedroom, augmented, if desired, with the friendly glow of the gaucho´s typical wood-burning salamander. The estancia´s living room is now a spacious common room, in which guests can enjoy satellite TV or videos, a round of billiards, a game of chess or hand of cards. On the adjacent gallery, there is ping-pong and metegol (table football). The park and surrounding ranch land, with its natural lagoons and small water courses running to the Areco River offer a rich habitat to a large proportion of Argentina´s 1000 bird species. No stay will be complete without at least one asado, the typical Argentinean barbecue of the world´s finest beef raised free-range on the estancia. One Day Visit The one-day visit gives guests the chance to immerse themselves as much as they wish in the life of a working estancia, dedicated mainly to raising Hereford and Aberdeen Angus Stock. Guests are welcome to observe and take part in the various stock-rearing activities as they happen on the ranch: milking, driving cattle to harness, vaccination, ear-tagging, de-horning, branding, etc. Guests can explore the 300-hectare (ca 750 acre) estancia on foot or, accompanied by seasoned gauchos, on one of the 38 horses that are part of the working drove. Horse drawn carriages are also available. Those that want to learn some of the thousand species of Argentinean birds are provided binoculars and guide books.
