The volcanic island of Lanzarote, is the most northern island of the Canary islands. In 1993, the entire island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The airport is located near the capital Arecife. Lanzarote has 139 506 inhabitants. The national language is Spanish. Lanzarote is known for its barren lunar landscape, the works and buildings of the artist Cesar Manrique, and the Fire Mountains National Park Timanfaya. Cesar Manrique had a major impact on the design of the island. History of Lanzarote

It is believed that Lanzarote and Fuerteventura was once one island. The Phoenicians are said to have already settled in 1100 BC the island. The Frenchman Jean de B├ęthencourt conquered beginning of the 15th century Lanzarote and the end of the same century, Spain held the power. 1824, occurred the last major volcanic eruption, which buried several villages between them.
