Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands with a population of around 829.57. The capital is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. National language is Spanish. Gran Canaria is known due to the sand dunes of Maspalomas.

History of Gran Canaria

The origin of the aborigines, called Guanches, is uncertain. It is estimated that Berbers from North Africa around 3,000 BC, settled the Canary Islands. The Spaniards settled in the 15th Century and took over 1495 the rule. Legend has it in 1492, Christopher Columbus stopped at Gran Canaria before he discovered America. Spain belongs to the EU since 1986 but the Canaries have a special status as a free trade zone.
